Industry eyes were waiting to see who would come out on top this weekend - Ridley Scott's epic Alien prequel Prometheus - or the more family friendly Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted. In the end, family fare won out.

Industry eyes were waiting to see who would come out on top this weekend  – Ridley Scott’s epic Alien prequel Prometheus – or the more family friendly Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. In the end, family fare won out.

PROMETHEUS debuted this week to $50 million in the states and pulling in a grand total of $93 million overseas. The worldwide total of $142 million on an $130 million dollar budget makes it profitable in its first week.

While that was good and just under expectations it was not good enough to beat MADAGASCAR 3 which turned in $60 million in its opening weekend which is $3 million less than the second installment. Internationally MADAGASCAR 3 pulled in another $76 million giving it a total of 136 million in weekend number 1. MADAGASCAR 3 has a $145 million dollar budget which also means the animated film will make its money back and then some.

Coming in third this week was SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN with a $23 million dollar haul bringing it to just under $100 million in the US in two weeks.

Coming in fourth was MEN IN BLACK 3, with $13.5 million and $135 million nationwide and still in the top 5 THE AVENGERS who pulled in another $10.8 million domestically rounding them out to $571 million.

Next week ROCK OF AGES musical starring Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand and Paul Giamatti hits theaters and the Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg comedy THAT’S MY BOY will also release as from the looks of it, we could see exits of THE AVENGERS and MIB3 out of the top 5 next week.
